AI & LAW
At the end of this course, you will have a basic understanding of how to:
- Understand the legal significance of the artificially intelligent software and hardware.

COURSE STRUCTURE
We will explore the following questions:
Module 1. AI & Low
The first module of the course provides a general introduction to the field of AI and Law. The module also explores the legal significance of AI software and AI hardware.
Module 2. Legal AI in the Public Sector
This module examines the way in which AI is used in public law. The module specifically looks into four distinct ways in which AI is used in the public law context: AI and legal responsibility, in what ways AI can be used in criminal law, how to use AI to model law and lastly, how AI can be used by public authorities and administrations to optimize the services that they provide to us, the citizens.
Module 3. Legal AI in the Private Sector
The third module explains the impact of AI in the private sector. The module includes AI and IP Law, how AI can be a valuable source in predicting legal outcomes and lastly, how AI and big data can and is being used to impact the financial market.
Module 4. Selected Challenges
In the fourth and last module of the course, selected challenges connected to artificial intelligence within various fields of law are discussed. What kind of impact AI will have in these areas is a complex question and this module addresses several issues regarding the medical sector, labour law and competition law.

Jeffery Atik, Visiting Professor of Law at Lund University. Jeffery Atik is Professor of Law and Jacob Becker Fellow at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, as well as Guest Professor in Civil Law at Lund. He is also co-Principal Investigator of the Lund Quantum Law research project, funded by the Wallenberg Foundations. Atik teaches a series of courses covering law and innovation, including Artificial Intelligence and Law, Smart Contracts and Financial Technology, and Innovation Law / Technology Transfer. His current research areas include computational law, AI and financial regulation, and AI and international trade / national security.
Valentin Jeutner, Associate Professor of Law at Lund University. Valentin Jeutner is an Associate Professor of Law at Lund University's Faculty of Law. Educated at Oxford (BA), Georgetown (LLM), and Cambridge (PhD) his teaching and research activities focus on foundational questions of (international) law.
Ulrika Andersson, Professor of Law at Lund University. Ulrika Andersson is Professor of Criminal Law at the Faculty of Law, Lund University, Sweden, working as a teacher and researcher in criminal law and criminal procedural law. Her main research focuses broadly on questions concerning law and power.
Vilhelm Persson, Professor of Law at Lund University. Vilhelm Persson is professor of Public Law at Lund University. He has a broad interest in public law and his research has dealt with both constitutional and administrative law. Much of his research involves issues that arise when national public law meets today’s globalized world. His dissertation investigates the competence of Swedish public authorities to conclude administrative agreements with foreign counterparts, what the agreements may deal with and consequences of agreements concluded ultra vires.
Lena Wahlberg, Associate Professor of Law at Lund University. Lena Wahlberg is an associate professor in jurisprudence, specializing in medical law. Most of her research has been concerned with ethical, conceptual and methodological problems that arise in the interface of law and other scientific disciplines. In her doctoral thesis, she examined some of the difficulties that arise when information from the natural sciences is used in the enforcement of tort law and environmental law.
Niklas Selberg, Senior Lecturer of Law at Lund University. Dr Niklas Selberg is senior lecturer in private law at the Faculty of Law, Lund University. Selberg's research interests include inter alia the legal regulation of labour relations in the gig economy, trade secrets and anti-discrimination legislation. He has published widely in these areas. At the LL.M.-programme Selberg teaches among other subjects labour and employment law, health and safety law and corporate law.
Titti Mattsson, Professor of Law at Lund University. Titti Mattsson is Professor in Public Law, specialising in Health law and Social welfare law at the Faculty of Law at Lund University. A theme of her research is the governance of welfare state issues from national as well as transnational perspectives with the outcome for the group and the individual in focus. Within this theme, her research addresses legal, social and ethical issues regarding various public-law activities, such as health and community care for children, disabled persons and the elderly. She holds the title of Docent in social law as well as in Social work. Mattsson has many years of extensive experience of interdisciplinary and comparative research collaborations with researchers in law, social work and medical ethics, nationally as well as internationally.
Julian Nowag, Associate Professor of Law at Lund University. Julian is associate professor (docent) in EU law at Lund University specialised in EU and Competition Law and an associate at the Oxford Centre for Competition Law and Policy where he is on the editorial board of The Journal for Antitrust Enforcement as managing editor. Julian earned a Master’s degree (MSt) and a doctorate (DPhil) from the University of Oxford. He also completed an LLM in European Legal Studies at Durham University and undergraduate law studies in Germany and Austria.
