COURSE PROGRAM

This course exposes students to the fundamental skills required to make sophisticated graphic design: process, historical context, and communication through image-making and typography. The sequence is completed by a capstone project that applies the skills of each course and peer feedback in a finished branding project suitable for a professional portfolio.

Anther Kiley - Instructor, California Institute of the Arts

Anther Kiley is a designer and design educator based in Providence, RI. He holds a BA in history from Princeton University and an MFA in Graphic Design from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). He is currently adjunct faculty in the Graphic Design department at RISD, and previously co-directed the Program in Graphic Design at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). Anther’s commissioned design work includes exhibition, print, web, and product design. Since 2016, he has been developing Cardkits, a line of paper toys for children. http://cardkitstoys.com/

Louise Sandhaus - Faculty, Program in Graphic Design at California Institute of the Arts

Louise Sandhaus is a current faculty member and former Program Director of Graphic Design at CalArts. Through her design office, LSD (Louise Sandhaus Design), she collaborates across disciplines on diverse projects for clients such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, UCLA Hammer Museum, and Los Angeles World Airports. Author of "Earthquakes, Mudslides, Fires and Riots: California and Graphic Design 1936-1986," her work has been featured in publications like Metropolis magazine and is housed in collections including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. A former AIGA board member and chair of its Design Educators Community, Louise holds an MFA from CalArts and is a Graduate Laureate from the Jan Van Eyck Akademie in The Netherlands.

Michael Worthington - Faculty, Program in Graphic Design at California Institute of the Arts

Michael Worthington, a founding partner of Counterspace in Los Angeles, is known for his editorial and identity work for the arts, with book designs including "A New Sculpturalism" and "Made in L.A. 2012." His designs have been showcased globally, from Japan to the US. He's been a judge for notable design events and has contributed writings to publications like "Eye" and "Print." Worthington's expertise in design has been shared at the California Institute of the Arts since 1995.

Lorraine Wild - Faculty, Program in Graphic Design at California Institute of the Arts

 Lorraine Wild, based in Los Angeles, is a faculty member at CalArts' Graphic Design Program and founder of Green Dragon Office, a design firm collaborating with artists, architects, and publishers. She's also the Creative Design Consultant for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Honored with the AIGA Gold Medal in 2006, Wild has received accolades from institutions like the American Institute of Architects and has over 25 inclusions in AIGA's "50 Books/50 Covers." She's designed for prominent museums like MoMA and the Stedelijk Museum. Wild is an alumna of the Cranbrook Academy of Art and Yale School of Art.
